Nahargarh Fort

Picture yourself leaving the bustling markets of Jaipur behind and embarking on a journey upwards. As you ascend a ridge of the Aravalli Hills, a magnificent silhouette forms against the sky. This is your first glimpse of Nahargarh Fort, a majestic structure completed in 1734 by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II.

Though initially named Sudarshangarh, the fort eventually earned the moniker "Nahargarh," meaning "abode of tigers." Some say the fort was named so due to the population of tigers that once called these hills home. Other legends suggest that the fort owes its name to the Rajput kings who fought for their motherland with the prowess of tigers.

Designed for the observation of astronomical positions with the naked eye, they embody several architectural and instrumental innovations. The observatory forms part of a tradition of Ptolemaic positional astronomy which was shared by many civilizations. It contributed by this type of observation to the completion of the astronomical tables of Zij. It is a late and ultimate monumental culmination of this tradition.
