Surath Bhawan Palace

One of the most famous palaces of Uttar Pradesh, the 19th century Surath Bhawan was built by Rajahs belonging to the Shah dynasty of Khairigarh – Singahi state. Constructed on a small hillock between 1880 A.D. and 1891 A.D., its design is a unique specimen of Indo – Sarasenic revival style of architecture, inspired from European Chateaus. The entire palace complex including Kali temple is nestled amidst nearly 15 acres of verdant gardens and open grounds. In its hey days distinguished guests who enjoyed the hospitality of this magnificent property included the Prince of Wales, United States Senators, Duke of Connaught, Viceroy Lord Curzon, cricketer Douglas Jardine, Governor Sir Harcourt Butler, explorer Arthur Stannard Vernay, several prominent national politicians, princely rulers plus research teams from National Geographic & B.B.C., all attracted by the teeming biodiversity and picturesque scenery of the surrounding jungles of Terai.
