SUGAVANESWARAR TEMPLE
The Sugavaneswarar Temple, situated near the old bus stand of Salem, it is one of the importent pilgrimage sites of Salem. It is a reasonably big temple and one of the primary landmarks of the town. The main linga is in a slightly slanted position. Mother Swarnambikai is housed in a separate sanctum. This is one of the five temples with Swayambu lingams on the banks of manimuthar river that were worshipped by Beema. It is a 500 year old temple.The temple also sports certain traces of Cheras, Cholas and Pandyas, all ruling kingdoms from the Hindu mythology. This temple tops the list of historic temples in Salem city and draws immense popularity due to its historical and mythological relevance.
