Basilica of Bom Jesus – A Sacred Landmark of Goa

The Basilica of Bom Jesus, located in Old Goa, is one of the most iconic and significant landmarks in India. Known for its historical and religious importance, the Basilica attracts thousands of pilgrims and tourists from around the world. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, this magnificent church is a perfect blend of rich history, stunning architecture, and spiritual significance. Here’s a closer look at this beautiful church and why it’s an essential stop for anyone visiting Goa.

A Historical Icon

The Basilica of Bom Jesus is renowned for housing the relics of St. Francis Xavier, one of the founders of the Jesuit order and a missionary who played a crucial role in spreading Christianity in India and other parts of Asia. St. Francis Xavier's body was preserved in a silver casket, and his relics are still displayed in the church, making it an important pilgrimage site for Christians worldwide.

The church was built between 1594 and 1605 and is a fine example of baroque architecture. The name "Bom Jesus" translates to "Good Jesus" in Portuguese, reflecting the Christian faith’s reverence for the figure of Jesus Christ.
